Why ChatGPT is The Next Big Thing
Which one of us remembers talking to chatbots that claimed to be able to talk like humans, but ultimately were BAD. If you are a Gen Z kid like me, you can remember the earlier days of chatbots when they vaguely mimicked human interactions which weren’t quiet as impressive.
Things have come a long way since then. Some of you might have heard about GPT-3, a large language model…. I am just kidding. I am not here to bore you. GPT-3 might have been only known in the nerd community, But it’s latest cousin, GPT-3.5, also known by it’s nickname, ChatGPT, will definitely grab your attention.
Don’t believe me? Check for yourself . Type in anything, any question, and it will surely be able to give you an answer that’s almost indistinguishable from human speech. Maybe try writing below prompts:
- Write me a conversation between Harry Potter and Donald Trump
- Why did the chicken cross the road?
- Write me a blog on..…(jk. I wrote this myself)
The most impressive part? It doesn’t even have access to the internet, so it’s not just searching for answers like google. It’s creating this answers completely from the ground up.
ChatGPT is not only able to give you answers and make conversations. It is also capable of more complex tasks. I needed inspiration to write an application to my institution for forgiving my late fees. I wrote a perfectly written application with the help of ChatGPT, and guess what? IT GOT ACCEPTED.
People are reporting to use ChatGPT to take inspiration for their own writing, generating ideas and much more. Some users also said that ChatGPT is a better therapist to them than any other mental health professionals they have been to.
I hope you are convinced how amazing this thing actually is. If you still have doubts, don’t be shy! Head on to it’s website and try it out for yourself.
Now onto a little history lesson. ChatGPT is a machine learning model that can create real human-like interactions. It is made by OpenAI, who created much hype in 2021 for their other application, DALL-E 2, but that’s a topic for another time. You can read more about it in this article. (Or just ask ChatGPT about it).
It is built on a method called Natural Language Processing, which processes human language and uses machine learning to create human-like speech. ChatGPT is made with a huge amount of data, and as a result it can create human-speech more accurately.
However it is important to note that ChatGPT is nowhere near the AIs we see in movies. It is not sentient or conscious. It is just really good at processing the enormous amount of datasets it was given.
That doesn’t mean it is any less impressive. Everyone, even the industry giants are stoked by it’s capabilities. Multiple sources have sighted that it can sometimes do tasks even better than humans.
One professor tested this by taking homeworks from his students, then he told ChatGPT to do the same task. He then anonymously slipped ChatGPT’s work. As you can guess, he couldn’t distinguish it. He repeated this test many times and concluded that ChatGPT is capable of writing essays that coincide with the work of bottom 20% of University students.
This might not sound that impressive, but this is already a huge leap from it’s predecessor. Technology has a habit of improving exponentially. As ChatGPT feeds on more data and user inputs, it will become smarter and smarter until it will be skilled enough to take over humans.
But don’t let this demotivate you. As big a threat ChatGPT might become, it will also be a huge tool. If you have a homework due, you can easily use it to gain inspiration and ideas, just like I did for this blog.
It is very probable that being able to use ChatGPT and it’s subsequent improved models will be a must skill for anyone. That is why you should run over and check it out RIGHT NOW. I assure you that your future self will be thanking you for doing so.
